The June 3rd 30-lap SpeedSTR feature was finally completed on Wednesday night July 11th as part of the “Return To Racing Night”. Briggs Danner started on the pole and held off a determined Anthony Perrego and Tommy Kunsman,Jr. over the first five circuits before some wild Steve Buckwalter aerials brought out the red flag. Buckwalter took the Bob Swavely owned # 56 SpeedSTR for quite a tumble down the backstertch before ending up in turn 3. Buckwalter was not injured in the mishap but the Swavely owned, Rita’s Italian Ice No. 56 was done for the night.
When racing resumed, Danner held his ground and maintained the lead over Perrego, while 14th-starter Billy Pauch Jr. sliced his way to third by lap 16. On a restart with 17 complete, Perrego raced in the shadows of Danner through turns one and two and down the back chute. Perrego’s Wayne Subaru No. 1 was scored the leader as they crossed the stripe on the 18th circuit around the clay and the Montgomery, New York pilot proceeded to set the pace for the next four tours. Danner challenged Perrego one more time, shoving the nose of his car under Perrego and back in front to lead lap 22 by the scantest of margins. Danner cleared Perrego as they headed off turn two, as Tim Buckwalter slipped past Pauch Jr. for third at the same time.
Danner kept his focus under chief starter Mike Feltenberger’s white flag in scoring the win by 0.297-seconds over Perrego, who raced the last 15 laps with an engine that was misfiring. Tim Buckwalter wound up third with Pauch Jr. and Ohio’s Matt Westfall rounded out the top five.
