The road to the top for the World Championship Slingshot drivers is not an easy task. They must perform well at their weekly track or the National Series tour events. They must earn every position during the Super National weekends and they must keep their focus at the World Series of Dirt Racing where it could come down to a head to head matchup if the points are that close.
Jared Silfee, piloted the S & S Speedways # 55 to his 1st All Star crown. The Randy Smith / Jimmy Silfee prepared and maintained hot rod withstood all challenges from some of the best in the Slingshot class.Shelby McLaughlin repeated her 2017 Junior class accomplishments and the Mike McLaughlin maintained # 7 was not exactly a lock until the final 2 races were run.
Silfee’s WSoDR weekend began with a Raceway Park win, followed by a 3rd place run in the Saturday night main event. The Slingshot Derby was the deciding factor as Jared had some help from teammate Scott Neary who gave the young wheelsman a few shoves on the straightaways as he captured the 6 mile event on the big 1/2 mile oval.
Shelby used a 2nd place finish on the spacious 1/5th mile on Friday and a strong run to the checkered on Saturday to get the much needed championship points from the 2 Raceway Park races.
Here is a look at their seasons in review
For Jared Silfee it was Super National finishes of 1st at Action Track USA,3rd at the Pocono Raceway Showdown,WSoDR Friday night win,3rd place on Saturday night and the Slingshot Derby win.Along the way,Jared won the Action Track USA 2018 All Star point crown and his National Series finishes could quite well be one of the strongest in Slingshot By Tobias tour history. The S & S 55’s 2018 National Series season looked like this, win at Snydersville, win at Oakland Valley, win at Spirit Speedway, win at Shellhammers,4th at Selinsgrove, win at Lanco, win at West End and a win at Hamlin. The 3 races not claimed by Silfee were the Skyline Park event won by Jasper Ziegafuse and the Selinsgrvoe Speedweeks show won by Justin Thompson. The Pocono Super National was won by Matt Mertz.
Shelby’s season was a mixed bag as weather issues took a few tour races off the schedule as her 10th place run at the Action Track USA Super National put her out of the top 20 heading to Selinsgrove.8 points races were run for the Junior National Series points and Shelby started that off quite well with a win at Snydersville. The rest of her tour season was spent near the front when the checkered dropped but it wasn’t until her WSoDR weekend that championship aspirations set in for the McLaughlin family.Shelby finished 3rd at Oakland Valley, she was victorious in the Reading Junior Nostalgia National,6th in the August race at Raceway Park with a pair of 3rds at West End Fair and Hamlin.Skyline Park,Oakland Valley and West End tour stops were won by Kasey Hufcut,Jax Yohn was the Shellhammers winner,Tanner VanDoren was the winner at Selinsgrove and Hamlin.
These 2 champions will be honored along with the rest of the Elite 11 and Great 8 at the February 2nd,2019 awards banquet at Bear Creek Resort Lodge in Macungie,PA.
