The indoor racing season for the Slingshots threw it’s final checkered at the NYSF Expo Center on Saturday night March 9th.Racing was quite intense both days with the 20 cars in attendance putting on some 3 wide racing on the indoor oval.
Qualifying was done by luck of the draw heat qualifying and a heads up A Main starting spot.
Friday’s 20 lap main was slowed by 6 yellows with Austin Silfee and Craig Whitmoyer setting the pace.Moving through the field was the Miller Motorsports # 66 of Kurt Bettler, who would end up 3rd.A midrace tangle with Jared Silfee and Tyler Truex would change the outcome of the overall point chase as Truex who was the point leader heading into Syracuse would finish 13th.and Silfee who was in the mix finishing 14th.Atlantic City winner Danny Buccafusca had enough to run with the leaders but not enough to get by them and had a private battle with Bettler settling for 4th..The battle for 5th through 10th was the attention grabber as 7 cars were racing hard for those 5 spots with Kyle Herve just getting to the scoring loop a split second ahead of 2009 National Champion, Cody Kline.Falling just short for 6th after a strong turn 4 charge was Shellhammers hotshoe Mark Mohr.Nick Shaw slotted in at 8th with Matt Mertz recovering from an early lap accident to garner 9th.Rounding out the top 10 was Mike Lapicki ,who tangled with lapped traffic and rebounded from a last restarting spot for 10th.
Saturday night’s luck of the draw helped the Mark Grassi #8 driver Louden Reimert who went from a last place starting spot on Friday to a pole position starting spot on Saturday.Louden was thrilling the packed house with his power through the turns and lifting the left front up quite a bit during the 20 lap main.Only 3 cautions slowed this race and putting on a dazzling bit of driving was Cody Kohler who the night before rolled the #29 in turn 4 to end his night quickly.Cody was beginning to close in on Reimert but ran out of laps to make a full challenge.A late race shuffle saw quite a few spots change as the white flag was being waved with the outside line getting bottled up allowing Danny Buccafusca and Kurt Bettler to show their driving skills in diving under this group to take 3rd and 4th at the finish line.Friday’s winner Austin Silfee rounded out the top 5.Cody Kline copied his Friday finish with his 2nd 6th place finish of the weekend.Tyler Truex and Nick Shaw were side by side at the line with Truex getting 7th and Shaw 8th.Jared Silfee was 9th and Matt Mertz completed the top 10.
As a long time member of the Slingshot Family,Kurt Bettler has tried and tried and tried to be an indoor race winner, only to fall short a few times and have some of the worst luck any racer could have during these events.Him and the Scott Miller # 66 Motorsports have soldiered on and showing some patience behind the wheel,Kurt made some smart decisions over the weekend in making it through some incidents that could’ve involved the yellow hot rod,but in the end a 3rd place run on Friday and a 4th place finish on Saturday after being posted as 7th on the 19th lap, gave Bettler and the hard working 66 crew the 2019 Sammons Motorsports Indoor Racing Series Slingshot Point Championship.
A tip of the cap to Randy Smith of S&S Speedways as he was the 1st person to congratulate Reimert and Bettler for their efforts on Saturday.
